In my practice, I seek to blur the already thin line between memory and dreams.
Through film, an artist controls sight, hearing and even time itself. I am interested using this specific medium in order to explore temporal and visual defamiliarization. By creating an uncanny atmosphere through film, multimedia works and installation, the art exists in a space between material reality and the psychic landscape. While the work itself may often deal with severe mental distress, it is not created to brutalize the viewer with its imagery.
Creating artwork that other women can experience without having to see our bodies be abused in order to convey a concept is of the utmost importance to me. To be specific, I am referring to the seemingly endless amount of films by male directors that eroticize violence against women and deify our suffering. This type of work is not representative of our own anguish but instead is a fetishized version of our pain that seeks only to exploit the real life experiences of women and girls.
Therefore, in my work, by utilizing the abstract and metaphorical facets of visual storytelling through film as addressed previously, the subject can then be approached through more subtle and nuanced means.
